COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ducks kicker hopes FGs pay off Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Sep. 1, 2015 at 5:49 PM By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Sep. 1, 2015 at 5:49 PM » Social News EUGENE — Aidan Schneider isn’t exactly like one of those students who makes a half-court shot during a basketball game, wins free tuition and appears on SportsCenter. But the sophomore walk-on wouldn’t mind kicking his way to a scholarship at Oregon. “That’s the dream of the walk-on,” Schneider said after Monday’s practice. “My first goal was just coming here and then to start earning a scholarship step by step. I feel like I’m getting toward that point where we could have that conversation. I’m just going to keep kicking though, I’m not worried about that too much.” Schneider beat out junior Matt Wogan, a member of the 2013 recruiting class, for the starting placekicking job entering the Ducks’ opener on Saturday against Eastern Washington at Autzen Stadium. Last season Schneider was 11-for-12 on field goals with a long of 42 yards. Wogan made seven of his nine attempts. “I felt like I had a really strong camp. I think I missed one kick all camp in the full group situations, so I was really happy with that,” Schneider said. “I trust my form a lot more now. Wherever the kick is on the field, I just do what I’ve done a bunch of times and don’t change anything.” Wogan will still handle kickoffs. He has 44 touchbacks in 187 attempts the past two seasons. Both players know the depth chart is subject to change depending on results on game day. “It’s a lot like the NFL here, kind of. You’re a couple missed kicks away from somebody taking your job,” Schneider said. “Even though I’ve won the role of starter, and it’s not technically week by week, it always is. He’s been kicking great also and he wants the job too. I have to keep kicking my best to keep it.” Inside information Secondary coach John Neal compared Eastern Washington star receiver Cooper Kupp to injured Green Bay Packers star Jordy Nelson. Oregon quarterback-turned-cornerback Ty Griffin, who figures to play in his first football game since high school after making the two-deep as Chris Seisay’s backup, is looking forward to the challenge. “They have great receivers from what I’ve seen on film,” Griffin said. “No. 10 (Kupp) is their go-to-guy. He’s a big guy, he’s physical, he’s just as good as anybody we’ve got. The second guy, No. 1 (Shaq Hill), he’s pretty good, too. We’re not going into this game thinking it’s going to be like an easy game or anything. They’re tough competitors.” The Ducks will seek any information they can get on the Eagles from Vernon Adams, the former Eastern Washington star who is now Oregon’s starting quarterback. “Coach Neal sat down and talked with Vernon trying to get the inside scoop on everything,” Griffin said. “I’ll probably try to talk to him this week and get a few tips from him.” Neal said true freshman Malik Lovette is playing the role of Kupp on the scout team this week. Notable Starting wide receiver Charles Nelson, who returned a punt for a touchdown the first time he touched the ball at Oregon in last year’s opener against South Dakota, said he plans to return kicks again this season. ... Bralon Addison, who is listed as Dwayne Stanford’s backup at wide receiver on the depth chart, is penciled in as the punt returner and as a kickoff returner, along with Byron Marshall. … According to Oregon’s practice report, junior college transfer linebacker Jonah Moi, true freshmen defensive linemen Drayton Carlberg and Gus Cumberland and Rex Manu are on the scout team defense this week. … True freshman cornerback Jihree Stewart did not practice on Monday and was wearing a walking boot.
