PREP ROUNDUP: Nelson, Chieftains outlast Cougars By Staff reports Mar 18, 2019 10:45 PM A A ROGUE RIVER — Derek Nelson literally shouldered the load for the Rogue River baseball team in Monday’s District 6 opener against Illinois Valley. Not only did Chieftains’ senior pitcher grind to finish an eight-inning complete game, but he scored the winning run on Cameron Hooker’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving host Rogue River a 4-3 victory. With the contest knotted at 3-all after the Cougars (2-1, 0-1 Dist. 6) had tied it with a run in the top of the seventh inning to force the extra frame, Nelson was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third base on a throwing error. With two strikes, Hooker connected with the base hit to save the Chieftains (1-1, 1-0). Nelson was efficient through eight innings, tossing 96 pitches to strike out four while walking two with one hit batter. Hooker finished 2-for-4 for the Chieftains, while teammate Caden Tognoni went 2-for-3, crossed home plate twice and drove in a run.
