Mail Tribune 100, Jan. 10, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 10, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 10, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Jan. 10, 1916 GOLD HILL CLUB PLANS BIG RALLY FOR SATURDAY Deliberations of the Greater Gold Hill club at its last meeting resulted in the fixing of Saturday, January 15, as the date for a get-together banquet and session, to which will be invited representatives from the commercial clubs of other Southern Oregon cities. Committees have been appointed to supervise invitations, cuisine and decorative effect. The purpose of the gathering is by no means the mere pursuit of pleasure, but, incidental to the convivial nature of the evening, to discuss and plan the improvement of conditions locally and throughout the entire valley. Financial ratings of the dancing pavilion, a club project, were sent soaring by the committee report of the Christmas eve dance. Despite the heavy expense and the wayward weather, the net receipts totalled $32. Southern Oregon is manifestly enamored of the Gold Hill pavilion dances, and it is intended that another shall be given shortly. Realizing that once in so often the discriminating home public demands a return to the simplicity of local talent theatricals, the club has determined to meet the yearning with an old-fashioned minstrel show featuring the brightest of new-fashioned japes and jokes. We regret that we cannot quiet at this time the anxiety to learn the date of this peerless presentation of top talent — but it will occur within the next month or so. At the conclusion of regular business the annual election was held, the choices in each instance being unanimously confirmed without other nominations. H. D. Reed was elected president; J. H. Beeman, vice-president; F. W. Dodge, secretary; M. D. Bowers, treasurer; George Iverson, director for three-year term. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Richard Sanders, a local painter, who attended the poultry meeting Saturday, is looking for fullblood White Rocks today and had secured a fine cockerel at noon. He has a pen of pullets. Although residing in this city, he says he knows how to take care of a pen or two of good chickens and make them pay their way — and better. He is in thorough accord with the purpose of the organization began for the poultry people of the county and will do what he can to make it a success.
