The Jackson County commissioners have been meeting about growing restrictions in Jackson County which, if the commissioners have their way, would shut out roughly 85 percent of growers. That’s 6,000 growers, and 9,500 patients who will suffer. In Oregon, 69 cities and 18 counties have banned retail stores, producers, processors and wholesalers. This is happening because two lobbyists, Scott Winkels and Rob Bovett, representing the League of Oregon Cities and the Association of Oregon Counties, are actively encouraging city councilors and county commissioners to ban and/or significantly restrict grows. That’s roughly 400 city councilors and maybe 72 county commissioners. Clearly that number doesn’t come close to the 838,537 who voted in the largest statewide majority in U.S. history to enact marijuana legalization. These elected officials are not upholding the will of the people. They are getting away with this because no one is paying attention. Stand up to this overreach and speak at the next Jackson County Board of Commissioners public meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 10 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford. Mandy Valencia Medford Wildlife displaced Last week I photographed two remaining Canada geese at the corner of Rossanley Drive and North Central Avenue here in Medford. For years this area has been a wetland wildlife habitat, probably protected by federal regulation. I have witnessed ducks and geese playing, swimming and feeding in the water that would form each winter and into the spring, maybe longer in some wetter years. I have witnessed adult geese, followed by as many as six little goslings, all in a line, out for a stroll beside the road near these wetlands, all right here within our Medford city limits. But no more. All that remains is a big field of leveled out rock that has been hauled in for some new construction project. As I stopped to take the picture the male goose stood up and flapped his wings and started squawking in a protective gesture of his mate. It brought sadness to my heart. Where will they go from here? One last thought. What about federally protected wetlands? If this had occurred on someone's property where they wanted to build a house, do you think they could have gotten a permit to move ahead and build their dream home? Not a chance. My choice is to patronize the organizations that provide extra benefits to our valley.
