Questions remain in shooting Talent man recovering from wound to head By SARAH LEMON TALENT - Police on Thursday were seeking a suspect who shot a Talent man in the head at a grocery store parking lot Wednesday around 7:45 p.m. The victim, 23-year-old Ian Fry, no permanent address, was released from Rogue Valley Medical Center early Thursday morning. Fry was shot in the forehead by a man who gave him a ride but whom he said he didn't know. The bullet did not penetrate his skull but instead exited, causing minor injury. Fry apparently turned when he was shot at, causing the bullet to strike him at a slight angle, said Detective Eric Fox of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. After being shot, Fry walked into the store and asked employees to call 911. Tark's Sentry Market manager Connie Luhmann said once Fry wiped the blood off his face with paper towels, the wound didn't look as bad as it sounds. He kept repeating he couldn't believe someone would try to kill him, she said, adding that the victim appeared intoxicated. Police are not sure what provoked the shooting, but said Fry and the suspect may have been arguing. The attempted murder suspect fired one shot from a small-caliber handgun, according to sheriff's reports. Fry and the suspect met at Mr. C's at South Valley View Road and Highway 99, near Ashland, according to sheriff's department reports. The suspect apparently gave Fry a ride to Tark's at 215 E. Wagner Creek Road in Talent. The shooting may have happened when Fry was removing his bicycle from the back of the suspect's truck, Fox said. The suspect is described as a 6-foot, thinly built Hispanic or American Indian man in his 40s. Police said they believe he is a transient driving a blue 1980s full-sized pickup with a white canopy. The back door of the canopy is missing. At the time of the shooting, the suspect was wearing a white baseball cap with an American flag and the slogan "Top Cops," said Fox. The county's interagency major assault/death investigation team is helping Talent police with the investigation. The sheriff's department is asking anyone with information on the crime to contact investigators at 541-774-6800.
