Matthew Aranda, 32, of the first block of South Mountain Avenue, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison Monday after admitting to the crimes. He was convicted of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct to record on video, unlawful delivery of cocaine to a minor under age 18 and making her fear for her safety by stalking her between March 1, 2015, and Jan. 3 of this year. Additional counts of first-degree rape, coercion and multiple counts of child sexual abuse were dismissed in a plea deal. In a letter by the victim that was read aloud in Jackson County Circuit Court, she said she feared Aranda. The letter also said he had trapped her before she realized he was dangerous. "You've been a sociopath your whole life," the victim said to Aranda in the letter. Aranda apologized in court to the victim and her family. He has been lodged in the Jackson County Jail since Jan. 5 and will get credit toward his prison sentence for the time he has served in jail. His bail that was originally set at $250,000 was later increased to $750,000. He must register as a sex offender and provide a DNA sample. The victim was not present in court, but adult family members attended Aranda's plea and sentencing hearing. Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia urged the family members to be supportive of the victim and to help her heal.
