Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said police took a report around 2 p.m. of a shoplift in progress at the store. Budreau said a man, identified as Allen Shane Ledbetter, 25,  and a woman were caught shoplifting by store employees. Budreau said the pair resisted attempts to detain them and knocked one store employee unconscious. Budreau said Ledbetter apparently has a martial arts background and that the struggle ultimately injured two more people. Budreau said that although the case will end with Ledbetter and the woman facing felony assault and robbery charges, along with theft, the original items shoplifted totaled less than $40. "It was $39 in bras, paint and some screws," he said. Budreau said Ledbetter and his accomplice fled in a vehicle that vehicle registration records linked to an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Scenic Avenue, near its intersection with Grant Street. He said Ledbetter was spotted driving erratically in the area by a Central Point police officer. More than a dozen police officers from both Medford and Central Point, along with plainclothes detectives in body armor, blocked off the property's parking lot and took up positions on top of a nearby trailer. Police used a loudspeaker to communicate with Ledbetter, who Budreau said was believed to have access to weapons. "We're not going to go away," the negotiator said. "We don't want you ... to get hurt."  Ledbetter ultimately came out of the apartment with his hands in the air and was quickly arrested. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on felony charges of third-degree robbery and third-degree assault, as well as misdemeanor charges of third-degree theft and three counts of fourth-degree assault, jail records show. He's being held in lieu of $43,000 bail. Court records show Ledbetter has no prior felony convictions in the state, but does have a misdemeanor conviction for fourth-degree assault from May. Budreau said the female accomplice has been identified and will be interviewed by police. Her name was not immediately available. Reach reporter Thomas Moriarty at 541-776-4471, or by email at [email protected] . Follow him at @ThomasDMoriarty.
