Would not eating chicken actually protect him from the disease? — Scott H., Medford Hey, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, right? Experts — from the Jackson County Health Department to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — agree that eating properly cooked chicken shouldn’t be a danger. Cooking destroys pathogens like viruses, though you’re not likely to find any discounted chicken meat from Southeast Asia in local markets or restaurants anytime soon. Infected birds are destroyed to avoid spreading the disease. Bird flu has ravaged poultry flocks in Asia and shown up recently in Eastern Europe, but hasn’t been seen in America, the Department of Agriculture reports. Infected birds shed the virus in their saliva, nasal secretions and feces, so the disease spreads when birds are in close contact with one another or with contaminated surfaces, such as cages. The people in Asia who have come down with cases of bird flu also had direct contact with sick birds or contaminated surfaces, the CDC says on its Web site. Health authorities around the world are advising travelers to regions with documented bird flu cases to avoid poultry farms and markets where contamination is likely.
