Nancy Joanna Golden MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Oct. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News 1930 - 2014 Nancy Joanna Golden passed away in her home surrounded by loving family and friends September 24, 2014, she was 84 years old. Recently retired from the Rogue Valley Symphony after 21 years, Nancy's co-workers and friends brought live music to her bedside, filling her final time with sounds of flute, oboe, harp, guitar and drums. Nancy was born in Los Angeles, Calif. June 10, 1930, her father Harold Merritt was a star athlete and her mother Gladys Meyering was a talented artist and designer. Two years later Nancy's sister, Merry Fyffe, was born. The family of four moved to New York City in 1934 and lived in a Brownstone building by Central Park. Nancy's fondest memories were the summer weekends on the family's houseboat named Mother Hubbard moored on Oyster Bay. Sailing with friends would offset the backdrop of World War II, a frightening concern, as family friends were stuck in Europe. It was during this time when Nancy began her deep rooted interest in politics. She would remain active in politics the rest of her life, participating and donating for cherished causes and campaigning for candidates in presidential elections. Nancy graduated from Pomona College in California with a B.A. in economics. She earned her masters degree in educational media at Oregon State College of Education in Monmouth, Ore. In 1963 she earned a Certificate of meteorological reporting from the National Weather Service. Nancy married David Freeman in 1950 and they had four children together. The family moved from Claremont, Calif. to Brookings, Ore. in 1963. In Brookings she worked for the Curry County Pilot, was a librarian at the high school, and a weather observer for the National Weather Service. In 1974 Nancy moved to Portland, Ore. to work at Northwest Labs. Nancy married John Golden in 1976. They resided in West Seattle, Wash. She worked for a law firm, managing all documents for the Native American fishing rights case, then before the U.S. Supreme Court. It was a landmark case. Nancy then worked at Plants Alive magazine, authored a book, Dress Right for Business, and helped her sons, David and Greg, produce their Jazz shows in Seattle. Nancy moved to Ashland, Ore. in 1986, working for the Tidings, Trinity Episcopal Church, writing local entertainment reviews, and was the publication director for the Rogue Valley Symphony, a job she dearly loved. She produced the symphony's program books and wrote all the program notes for over 25 years. Nancy loved her garden creating a Shangri-La surrounding her house. A friend described her as wickedly smart with a twinkle in her eye. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, David R Freeman; her sister, Merry Fyffe; and her son, David M. Freeman. She is survived by her son, Greg Freeman; her daughters, Susan Freeman and Jan Freeman Long; her grandchildren, Nevin Freeman, Chelsea Villa, and Jeff Gillette; and two great-grandchildren, Yassenia Villa and Ezekiel Villa along with numerous other relatives. A celebration of Nancy's Life will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Pioneer Hall located across from Lithia Park, 240 S Pioneer Street, Ashland, Ore. Nancy's preferred memorial contribution is to the Rogue Valley Symphony, http://www.rvsymphony.org/support/make-a-donation/ MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am You may leave your condolences or share memories by signing the Guest Book here » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
