The 18-year-old college student was crowned Miss Rogue Valley of 2005. A freshman at Rogue Community College majoring in dental hygiene, she wins a $2,500 college scholarship and goes on to compete in the Miss Oregon Pageant in July. Steers also won a $500 scholarship for most improved talent and shared a $500 interview award with Sara Schneider, 17, of Medford, who was also third runner-up. First runner-up in the Miss Rogue Valley Scholarship Program at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford was Julia Strickland, 22, of Central Point, winning a $2,000 scholarship. Barbara Jean Penney, 22, of Medford, was second runner-up, an award worth $1,500. Third runner-up Schneider earns $1,000. Advertisement Allison Meadows, 17, of Ashland, was voted Miss Congeniality, worth $250. Two talent awards were presented, a finalist award, $500, to Strickland, who sang "Your Daddy’s Son" from "Ragtime," and non-finalist, $250, to Tarah Roberts, 19, of Central Point, who sang "New York, New York." Each contestant also receives a $600 scholarship for taking part. Steers performed a song and dance routine to "I Can’t Do It Alone" from the musical "Chicago." The most improved award that she won is a new one this year in memory of Greg Hayes, who helped stage the pageant for many years. Contestants were judged in five categories: interview, which carried the most weight at 40 percent; talent, 30 percent; and 10 percent each for appearance in casual wear, evening gown and lifestyle and fitness (swimsuit). The five judges conducted the interviews earlier in the day. The new Miss Rogue Valley is the daughter of Dennis and Dori Steers. At RCC she has been involved in student government and was Student of the Year for 2004. Each contestant has a platform. Appropriate to her major, Steers’ is "the importance of water fluoridation and good oral hygiene." First runner-up Strickland seeks to promote fine arts programs; second runner-up Penney campaigns for meningitis awareness, while third runner-up Schneider promotes the National Association for Self-Esteem. Emcees for the event were C.W. Smith, Jackson County commissioner, and Rosemary Harrington, radio talk show co-host. A number of local singers and dancers entertained. Cassie Tolman, Miss Rogue Valley of 2004, displayed her considerable vocal talents in a number from "Phantom of the Opera" and the familiar "Time to Say Goodbye," which she sang in last year’s pageant.
