On Sept. 17, the day after Sandoval allegedly fired three shots into an occupied west Medford apartment building, Angel Manuel Garcia, 34, is believed to have driven his brother, Sandoval, 17, and co-conspirator Santiago Flores-Loveland, 18, to Roseburg. Garcia, now of the 100 block of Timberlake Avenue, Roseburg, pleaded not guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court on four felony charges of hindering prosecution. A pretrial conference is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 8 in the case. According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Garcia's case, police had contacted Garcia prior to the escape seeking Sandoval's whereabouts at his Medford home in the 300 block of Bessie Street. Police explained to Garcia that Sandoval was facing attempted murder charges and instructed Garcia to call detectives immediately if Sandoval contacted him, the document says. Police also warned Garcia not to aid or harbor his brother, or he would face hindering prosecution charges. Sandoval's escape began what would be an almost two-month search, which ended with his Nov. 9 arrest at an apartment in Bellflower, Calif., in Los Angeles County. Flores-Loveland was arrested near Los Angeles in October. Sandoval was with Flores-Loveland at the time of his arrest, but lied about his name and initially eluded capture, according to Mail Tribune archives. During the first arrest, police learned that Garcia had been communicating with his brother, and on Oct. 14, Garcia was questioned at the Medford apartment of his girlfriend. During the interview, Garcia admitted to taking Sandoval and Flores-Loveland to Roseburg, and giving Sandoval money while he was on the lam, the documents say. The documents say that Garcia initially attempted to cooperate with police on Oct. 14 by providing authorities Sandoval's updated cell phone number. Police again warned Garcia not to contact Sandoval, but according to phone records, Garcia used his girlfriend's phone immediately after the interview to contact Sandoval, and Sandoval quickly shut down his new phone number. Garcia was arrested the next day. On Nov. 20, Sandoval pleaded not guilty on felony charges of attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon, riot and conspiracy to commit third-degree assault, and he will be tried as an adult in the case. Court records show that Sandoval was lodged in the Juvenile Detention Hall on Jan. 4. Sandoval has a scheduled trial date of Jan. 26 on the charges.
