Donald Eugene Shepherd, 60, of 725 Royal Ave., No. 82, in Medford, was arraigned Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court on two counts of first-degree aggravated theft and three counts of first-degree theft. He was arrested on Oct. 27. Shepherd previously worked as the general manager for Pacific Properties for several years, according to an affidavit. Part of his job was to collect coins from coin-operated laundry machines in apartment complexes scattered around the county. Shepherd was supposed to deposit the money into a Pacific Properties account at U.S. Bank, the affidavit says. Shepherd was fired in January, according to the affidavit. Pacific Properties owner Ronald Deluca said he immediately noticed a large increase in the amount of cash received from the laundry machines. Deluca then contacted police, who checked Shepherd's bank records and found that $60,398.21 in coins had been funneled through Shepherd's bank account, the affidavit said. Out of those coins, only $13,195.51 had been deposited in Pacific Properties' bank account, with $47,202.70 unaccounted for, police said. During an Oct. 27 interview with police, Shepherd admitted he had used his bank account to turn coins into bills, police said in the affidavit. Shepherd told police he had used some of the cash to pay for landscaping at the home where he lived — which was owned by Deluca — but could not account for the rest of the cash or explain where it had gone, police said in the affidavit. Shepherd is being charged with theft of the $47,202.70, according to court records. That amount equals almost 188,811 quarters.
