UP NEXT: 6A second round, Reynolds at Southridge, Wednesday. » Social News South Medford had a magical run through last year's Class 6A state softball playoffs. The Panthers won a home state play-in game, then went on the road to win three straight games before losing in the state semifinals to eventual champion South Salem. This year, South Medford had its sights on bigger things, but those expectations was dashed on a hot day when Reynolds of Troutdale knocked the Panthers out the playoffs with a 2-1 victory in the first round at South Medford High. "It's the playoffs and we needed run support," said South Medford coach Miranda Gillaspie-Smith. "We needed to be more patient at the plate and have them throw more strikes." Panthers sophomore ace Pat Moore (22-6) certainly pitched well enough to win. The 15-year-old left-hander allowed four hits and struck out 16. But Moore walked six and hit two batters and that proved to be her undoing. "(Moore's) pitching was the best we've seen — definitely the fastest," said Reynolds first-year coach Melanie Pfeiffer, whose team finished sixth in the Mount Hood Conference. "She's very, very impressive." South Medford (22-6) had Raiders' starter Cheyenne Vance on the ropes in the first inning, but the Panthers came away with just one run. Moore opened the bottom of the first with a bunt single. Krystal Williams, the No. 2 batter, hit a grounder that third baseman Trisha Wilson threw into right-center field trying to get the force at second. Moore scored all the way from first on the error and Williams reached third. But Williams was put out trying to score when Rachael Moore's bunt in front of the plate was fielded by catcher Cortney Curtis, who applied the tag on a sliding Williams. But South Medford wasn't done yet. Hannah Newman singled, putting runners on first and second. Alexis Baker followed with a grounder to Wilson, who forced out Rachael Moore at third but committed her second error of the inning on her throw to first. With runners on second and third, Vance struck out Bailee Tatum to end the inning. Vance settled in after the first. The senior right-hander allowed just one hit and faced the minimum of three batters in each of the next four innings. Vance's only blemish over that span was a second-inning, two-out single by Jeryka Johnson, who was put out trying to stretch it into a double. "(Vance) was super composed," said Pfeiffer. "She pitched her heart out." Vance, who's pitched every inning of the season for Reynolds (16-11), struck out five but didn't issue a walk while using a curveball and screwball. "Basically I was just trying to get my team through the game," said Vance. "I kept my focus and threw it where they couldn't hit it." Alison Walton was the Raiders’ offensive standout. The Reynolds sophomore shortstop smacked two doubles and drew a walk in four trips against Pat Moore. Her two-out RBI double to the gap in right-center scored Madi Gross with the winning run in the fifth inning. Gross was hit by a pitch after Pat Moore fanned the first two batters in the inning. "(Moore's) speed helped me," said Walton. "I just got the bat head on the ball. It's my job as the No. 4 hitter to bring runs around." Pat Moore collected two of South's four hits. "We knew Pat Moore would keep us in the ballgame," said Gillaspie-Smith. "They got the hits when they needed to. If you don't come out and bring your A game in the playoffs, it could happen to anyone.” The Raiders (16-11) advance to a second-round matchup Wednesday against the winner of the Centennial-Southridge game.
