The levy is "the biggest thing for RCC since moving into Jackson County," says Judy Basker, executive director of the school's foundation. "It doesn’t make any sense that we have people who need jobs, and jobs that are available," Basker says, "yet we are not able to produce enough qualified candidates for those jobs due to inadequate or dated facilities.” Passage of the measure on May 17 would mean as much as $28 million for Rogue Community College, funds officials say would go toward new facilities and health and technology-related programs. If passed, Measure 17-69 would tax Jackson and Josephine county property owners 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value — $10 a year for someone who owns a $200,000 home. The 20-year bond levy would collect $20 million, and RCC would also qualify for $8 million in matching funds from the state. “One of the biggest moves we did was back when I first came here and we were able to get the Table Rock campus opened up," recalls President Peter Angstadt. "Then about three years later, we were able to work with SOU and the Legislature to put up the Higher Education Center in downtown Medford. I’d say this is right on par with those big moves." The funds would go toward capital projects that include construction of a new facility or remodel of existing buildings at the White City and Medford campuses, intended for health care, technology manufacturing, fire science, EMT training and computer science programs. The money would also go toward remodeling buildings at the Redwood Campus in Grants Pass. The new or remodeled digs would include a nurse-training facility and science education center on the Grants Pass campus, career and technical education classrooms, and labs on all campuses and satellite sites. The community college put a bond before the voters in 2005, which passed and sunsets in the 2025-26 school year. The $24 million collected from the bond went toward covering the cost of upgrading facilities and building the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in downtown Medford.
