LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 29 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 29, 2015 @ 2:00 am Updated Jan 29, 2015 at 11:57 AM Posted Jan. 29, 2015 @ 2:00 am Updated Jan 29, 2015 at 11:57 AM » Social News Don't burn biomass I applaud Dr. Bob Palzer's recent letter (co-written with Paul Fouch) opposing SOU's proposed conversion from gas to biomass. My husband, Dr. Herschel King, and I became active in clear air efforts led by Dr. Palzer in 1988, when we first moved to Ashland. We are dismayed that the biomass burning is apparently favored by SOU and the city, especially in view of our increasingly frequent stagnant air advisories, forest fires and the "controlled burning" which seems to occur whenever we do get a clean air window. But I don't need Dr. Palzer's recommendation to oppose such a move: I suffer chronic allergies and sinusitis, which seem to have gotten worse since moving to Ashland. Another consideration is the "U-shaped" topography in the Rogue Valley — beautiful, of course, but the three mountain ranges forming the "U" naturally trap smoke and pollutants. We must do everything we can to improve our air quality — not add particulates and smoke to the air. Liz Vesecky, Ashland Drop the expansion Given current conditions (and the fact that even our Congress just approved an amendment stating that "Climate change is not a hoax"), wouldn't it make sense for the struggling Mt. Ashland Association to drop their plans for future expansion? For years, half of our community has been bitterly divided by views on expanding the ski area, or not. I do believe, however, that all of us could agree and would like to see our local ski area preserved and maintained. I don't think any of us would like to lose our winter resort area or see it dismantled. This may be a good time for all of us to come together. If the association were to drop expansion plans, I bet we'd see the entire community strongly supporting, contributing, and trying to hang onto our little ski area through these hard times. I hope so. Lynn Ransford, Ashland Teamwork is the answer Some suggestions to alleviate poverty: The city needs to work together as a team for the betterment of the entire city. Perhaps several companies can donate supplies and the team can implement upkeep without charge, as in volunteering services. Mentoring is another very important tool for people to learn, better themselves and encourage teamwork. Perhaps even to go as far as reality TV to do makeovers of houses. A far-fetched idea, it could very well work with reality TV! Neighborhood alert watches are also important, so people know their immediate neighbors and watch out for each other, as a way to lower crime. Medford also needs to have their priorities straight. Poverty evidently is quite large, so it stands to reason, this is top priority. The project of poverty is gigantic in Medford and will take several years of people working together to beautify Medford. Jeff Kassman, Ashland How about a zip line? Would it be feasible to have a zip line on Mount Ashland? If so, that would vastly increase the time when that area could be profitable.
