Heavily criticized starter Derek Anderson was pulled when the game got out of hand. It was his least productive outing of the season with only 137 yards, two interceptions and no passing touchdowns. Afterward, coach Mike Riley said the fans were too rough on Anderson. "Are they being too hard on him? Yes they are," Riley said. "I think we’ll look at that film, and we’ll see a lot of pass rush — a lot of free people. We didn’t sustain our blocks." Gunderson made the most of his opportunity. The Portland native and Central Catholic High graduate completed 7 of 15 passes for 74 yards in three drives, and guided the Beavers to seven first downs. Advertisement His first two possessions concluded with Sam Paulescu punts. The final drive ended on downs on Cal’s 3-yard line. CAL SENIOR WIDE RECEIVER Chase Lyman played the game of his life — and needed only one half to do it. He ended up with five receptions for a career-high 176 yards and three TDs. His three receiving scores before halftime tied a Cal record. The last to do it was Bobby Shaw against the Beavers on Sept. 28, 1996, in a game that featured three overtimes. "He’s a big-play guy," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said of Lyman. "He made some good plays on the ball and kept his concentration throughout the game." SAMMIE STROUGHTER took over the punt returning chores after a good performance last weekend, and he added kick returning to his duties. The true freshman did well, returning four kicks for 89 yards and two punts for four yards. He made good decisions on when to catch the ball and when to leave it alone. Fellow true freshman Lamar Herron was the second kick returner, and brought the ball back once for 24 yards in his first career return. Both have been used as blockers and tacklers on special teams. Herron has been a key reserve as a safety, while Stroughter is working out as a wide receiver. CORNERBACK ARIC WILLIAMS picked off his second pass of the season in the second quarter in spectacular fashion. He leaped over the receiver from behind and grabbed the ball with one hand. He added another pick in the third quarter. TWO OSU FANS RAN ONTO the field between the third and fourth quarter, and grabbed the Cal flag. They dropped it on the 20-yard line and then walked off the field. Oregon State Police handcuffed them and took them out of the stadium.
