Pirates rally past pesky Chieftains PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Pirates scored 28 second-half points Friday to overtake the Rogue River Chieftains, 35-25, in a spirited Skyline Conference football game between Jackson County rivals. For the first time all season, the Pirates had no turnovers. "The last few weeks we've overdone it in important games," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. The victory gave the Pirates a winning season, 5-4, as they finished 3-4 in the Skyline. Rogue River finished 2-5 in conference and 2-7 overall. The Chieftains led 13-7 at the half. But the Pirates took the lead in the third quarter on Chris Loftin's 1-yard run and a 9-yard sprint by Christian Heath. Joel Bath dashed 58 yards to give the Pirates a 28-19 with 5:06 to play. But Rogue River's Jesse Smith, who gained 249 of his team's 294 rushing yards, brought the Chieftains back for the second time in the fourth quarter. "As soon as we got the lead Smith was running off the left side of the line and getting big chunks," Hagler said. Phoenix QB Bobby Dawson hit 6-of-14 passes for 76 yards, including a 38-yard TD to Bryon Monical. A second TD pass was called back.
