COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ducks eye star quarterback Eastern Washington's Adams will visit Oregon this weekend Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 29, 2015 @ 6:57 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 29, 2015 @ 6:57 pm » Social News Oregon could be adding a quarterback who has already turned in some memorable performances against the program’s biggest rivals. Eastern Washington star Vernon Adams Jr., who is scheduled to graduate in June and would be eligible to play for the Ducks during the 2015 season, told The Spokesman-Review in Spokane he has a scholarship offer from coach Mark Helfrich and will visit UO this weekend. “They told me a lot of things I wanted to hear,” Adams said of the Oregon coaching staff. “I’m not saying I’m leaving Eastern, but I’m just going to check it out and see what they have to say.” On Aug. 31, 2013, Adams burst onto the national scene when he passed for 411 yards and four touchdowns and ran for the game-winning touchdown to lead Eastern Washington of the Big Sky Conference to a 49-46 upset of No. 25 Oregon State in Corvallis. “You don’t really prepare for something like that, and we were a step behind,” then-Oregon State coach Mike Riley said of Adams’ performance after the game. “He was eluding tackles, which I think was a major factor in the game, the number of tackles that he made us miss and number of missed opportunities we had to sack him. And then there were the big plays he made. Early in the game, he set the tone for how the rest of the game went.” On Sept. 6, 2014, Adams passed for 475 yards and an Eastern Washington single-game record seven touchdowns during a 59-52 loss at Washington. “Their quarterback, Mr. Adams, is a very fun guy to watch,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said. “He never panics, is a playmaker.” If Adams decides to compete for Marcus Mariota’s old job, the move will add some intrigue to Oregon’s Sept. 5 opener against Eastern Washington at Autzen Stadium. “I’m not going there to be a walk-on or a second-stringer,” Adams told The Spokesman-Review. “But if I do go down there, I’m going to work my butt off.” Adams was lightly recruited out of Biship Alemany High in Mission Hills, Calif. After redshirting in 2011, the 6-foot-0, 200-pound senior-to-be has completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 10,438 yards with 110 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in 37 games for the Eagles. He has also rushed for 1,232 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2013, Adams finished second for the Walter Payton Award to Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo, who is currently Tom Brady’s backup with the New England Patriots. Last season, despite missing four games with a broken foot, he was the runner-up for the FCS equivalent to the Heisman Trophy once again. If Adams transfers to Oregon he will compete with Jeff Lockie, Morgan Mahalak, Ty Griffin, Taylor Alie and incoming 2015 recruit Travis Waller for the starting quarterback position, which opened up when Mariota announced shortly after the national championship game he was entering the NFL draft.
