The break-in forced Downtown Grounds, at 38 N. Central Ave., to close Sunday, but the business reopened Monday. Co-owner Michael Szczesniak said he stopped by the shop Saturday night to see what supplies would be needed for the next day. On Sunday morning, he arrived to find the front window smashed out and the cash register pried open, with an undisclosed amount of cash missing. "I truly care about that business," Szczesniak said, "more than a typical employee might care about a typical business. I'm very, very proud of it. To be that blatantly disrespected by somebody, it hurts, really." Medford police estimated the damage from the break-in at more than $400. Szczesniak is still in talks with its insurance company regarding repairs. The window has since been boarded up. "All in all, we really didn't end up losing out from a whole lot. We're going to be able to pick ourselves up from this really well," Szczesniak said. But even with minimal damage, Szczesniak said he has received an outpouring of support from loyal patrons. Szczesniak said he wants to install security cameras to make sure he can catch suspects in the act should a similar incident happen again. Downtown Grounds has operated at 38 N. Central for about eight years. Prior to that, Szczesniak operated a drive-thru operation called Coffee Cabin near Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.
