Mustangs topple Denver squad SALEM - The Denver, Colo., Lightning American Legion baseball team had 19 wins and just two losses coming into the Willamette Classic tournament. Both losses were to college foes and the Lightning figured to maybe drop one game by a run or two in the tournament. That's until they ran into the right arm of Medford Mustang Chris Empio. Empio no-hit Denver for 7� innings and the offense helped out with 13 hits in a 9-2 win for the Mustangs on Sunday. Medford improved its record to 6-6-1 on the season after snapping a four-game losing streak on Saturday. Dustin Butler went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs with a two-out double to highlight a five-run first inning for Medford. That was more than enough support for Empio. He issued one of his two walks on the afternoon to Justin Lennon in the second inning, but went on to retire the next 13 batters. Empio struck out 10 and went one out into the eighth before giving up a swinging bunt single down the third base line. Empio lost his shutout one batter later when Devon Warner dropped a two-run home run over the short right-field fence. Tyler Engle and Phil Ouellette each had two hits and an RBI, while Evan McArthur scored two runs to go along with his two baseknocks. SOUTHERN OREGON CLASSIC - At Eagle Point, the North Jackson Royals lost 12-0 to Jesuit and 6-5 to Ashland at the Southern Oregon Classic. Michael Lorelin pitched a two hit shut-out in five innings to lead Jesuit to the win. In the second game, Bill Rowe went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Ashland to the 6-5 victory. Two bright spots on the day for the Royals were Ryan Garrett and Kevin Gray who each hit home runs in the second game. The Grizzlies continued their success on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Crater. Rowe smacked a solo home run and gave up three hits, while striking out eight to pick up the pitching win. Rowe and Nick Danis each had two hits for Ashland, which improved to 2-1-1 on the season. SOUTHERN OREGON RIVERDOGS 7-9, EUGENE 1-8 - At Miles Field, the Riverdogs finished up a four-game sweep of the Eugene Knighthawks over the weekend with two more wins on Sunday. In Game 2, Steve DeClerk hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to send home Dave Wiesner and give the Riverdogs a victory. DeClerk went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with two RBIs. In the opener, the Riverdogs broke open a 3-0 game in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs on five hits. Don Jenkins hit two doubles in Game 1 for the Riverdogs. In Saturday's late action Dave Westfall hit a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Riverdogs a 5-4 win and a sweep of the doubleheader. The Riverdogs, 7-1, travel to Bend for a four game series against the Elks on Friday and Saturday.
