The Mavericks beat the Douglas Cats of Wyoming, 7-1, in their American Legion A Northwest Regionals opener at Laurel High. North Medford will next face Bitterroot, Mont., in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Saturday. The home state Red Sox edged the Wood River Wranglers of Idaho, 4-2, on Friday. The Mavericks (32-23) stretched out their legs before getting to work on Friday, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away. "Driving 20 hours is not an easy task," North head coach Brett Wolfe said. "We put 11 in on Wednesday and nine hours on Thursday and got a chance to work out in Idaho. That is a long drive so you've got to shake those bus legs." Wyatt Baptiste finished 3-for-5 and Quinton Rumrey 2-for-4 with two runs for the Mavericks. Winning pitcher Zack Collins improved to 7-2 after allowing six hits, one run (unearned) and three walks with nine strikeouts in seven innings. Baptiste came on in relief and finished with four Ks, striking out the side in the ninth. "Zack set the tone," Wolfe said. Douglas tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the second. Medford took the permanent lead in the fifth after a Collins RBI single to score Rumrey, a Josh Robbins push bunt and a Baptiste RBI single.
