When I took my slip inside for the money, the clerk told me that there is a state law that only allows you to return $7 worth at a time. Any truth? Thanks. -- Judi D., via e-mail That clerk was correct, Judi, although there's some semantic wiggle room in there the clerk didn't share or perhaps didn't know. Oregon's bottle bill was amended in 1993, placing a limit on the number of bottles that a store has to accept: 144 bottles per person per store per day, which at a nickel apiece comes to $7.20. The point is, the law doesn't prevent a store from taking more than 144 bottles or cans per person per day. The law just allows a retailer to impose that limit and still be in compliance. So, for instance, if you're, say, with a nonprofit and return lots of donated cans and bottles, you may be able to work out an arrangement with a store to accept all of your returns, no matter the amount. They are not required to do this and if they refuse you have no recourse other than to try another business. If, however, the retailer is refusing to pay for any returns and has sold that particular beverage in the last six months, you do have recourse and can lodge a complaint with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission by calling 800-452-6522. OLCC will investigate complaints and require retailers and distributors to follow the requirements of the law.
