Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 4, 2005 Search called off for man believed drowned in Rogue GOLD HILL — Dozens of Jackson County searchers, including divers, dogs and a helicopter failed Sunday to find a missing man who fell into the Rogue River while walking across a dam just above the Powerhouse rapids. The search for the Gold Hill resident was suspended after crews hunted until 1:30 a.m. Sunday and then again from 8:30 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. "We called off the search. We were unsuccessful," said Jackson County Fire District 3 Capt. Mike Hussey. Law enforcement officials did not release the man’s name. However, Lorie Josh, 43, confirmed Sunday that it was her husband, David Lee Josh, a 45-year-old tree trimmer, who remained missing. The couple live in the 1200 block of Upper River Road. David Josh was walking across the diversion dam above the Powerhouse rapids at about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, according to Jackson County sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Rowland. Josh slipped and fell, disappearing under the water. He is presumed dead, searchers said. At the time of the incident, river flow was at 2,500 cubic feet per second and the water temperature was about 52 degrees. Advertisement Lorie Josh, who witnessed the accident, called for help from a nearby house. Search and rescue crews searched the area from the diversion dam to the twin bridges area. They worked until about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and then resumed the search again after daylight. The tumultuousness of the river made the quest difficult, Hussey said. Crews included 25 search and rescue volunteers, six divers, four K-9 units, the search and rescue helicopter, the Fire District 3 swift water rescue unit and the Gold Hill Police Department. Family members also were on scene. Lorie Josh said law enforcement officials said they’d search again when the water level dropped — perhaps by Tuesday. "If they don’t find him, we will," she added.
