The team, which leaves on Dec. 28 and returns Jan. 7, will tour and compete in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Team members were selected based not only on their athletic prowess but also their academic achievements and citizenship standing. Heider carries a 4.0 grade-point average, she’s a member of the National Honor Society, she’s active in student government and, for the past eight years, has been involved in 4-H. On the softball diamond, Heider led an Eagle Point team to the 16-year-old B softball state championship last July. She also helped resurrect the high school team, posting a 6-8 record in the Southern Oregon Conference despite playing part of the season with a broken index finger on her pitching hand. Heider started the prep season with a 4-1 victory over South Medford and ended it with a 2-1 win over Roseburg. Both of those schools made the state playoffs. "I’m really looking forward to it," Heider says of her trip. "It’s going to be fun meeting other girls and seeing another part of the world." A STRONG SHOWING in fall sports coupled with a high academic standing fueled South Medford to third place in the Class 4A classification of the Oregonian Cup standings released Monday by the Oregon School Activities Association. North Medford wasn’t far behind, finishing in sixth place among the 82 schools in the 4A category for the fall season. Schools are ranked based on their athletic and academic accomplishments. A sportsmanship component is also factored in. Both Medford schools made the state playoffs in football, volleyball and boys and girls soccer. Leading the way on the academic side was the North Medford girls soccer team, whose average GPA of 3.81 was No. 1. The South Medford girls, with a 3.75 GPA, were fourth. St. Mary’s High, meanwhile, fared well in the Class 2A grouping. The Crusaders were fourth overall, thanks in large part to their boys soccer team, which advanced to the state semifinals, and their girls volleyball squad, which posted a 3.84 GPA to lead the state. The school’s football team finished second in GPA with a 3.32 and the girls soccer team was fourth with a 3.48. The highest overall standing among local 3A schools was Phoenix, which ranked 19th. The Oregonian Cup competition continues throughout the school year. SOUTH MEDFORD HIGH basketball fans have already gotten a good look at sophomore standout Kyle Singler, who earned second-team, all-conference honors as a freshman. It won’t be long until two other Singlers hit the high school scene. Mitch and E.J. Singler made their club-season basketball debuts over the weekend by helping their eighth-grade team to a tournament title at South Medford High. E.J. Singler, a 6-foot-1 wing/post and the younger brother of Kyle, had 23 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots while Mitch Singler, a 6-foot cousin of the other two, had 28 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in fueling their South Medford AAU team to a 91-45 victory over a team from Eureka, Calif., in the championship game.
