Lilja Gudrun Kristjanson was born August 6, 1922, in the Icelandic-Canadian wheat farming community of Wynyard, Saskatchewan. The fifth of seven children of Icelandic immigrants, Lily completed the standardized Canadian high school curriculum at 16 in a one-room school house; teacher training at 17; and at 18 was teaching in small school houses on the Canadian prairies. During World War II, Lily attended University of Saskatchewan, where she became one of Canada's first female national debate champions in 1946. Lily attended graduate school at McGill University in Montreal, receiving her first master's degree in Library Science from McGill in 1948. A voracious reader her entire life, Lily took a position as reference librarian at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. In 1952, Lily was offered an administrative position as head of the reference department at the University of Southern California's famous Doheny Library (where she also managed to pick up her second master's degree in English). Shortly after arriving at USC, Lily assisted a young WWII veteran, Joseph Hearn, in locating reference materials necessary for his doctoral dissertation on the history of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Their marriage in 1953 lasted over 40 years, extinguished only by his death in 1994. Shortly after the birth of their first son, Christian, in 1961, Joseph received a Fulbright Scholarship and the family moved to the remote African village of Mongu in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). After the family's return, they moved to Redlands, Calif. directly before their second son, Eric, was born in 1966. They lived in their beautiful mission style hillside home where they regularly entertained for 34 years. Both active in the Redlands community, Lily participated in AAUW and Friends of the Library. Lily embarked on her 23-year career as a college professor at San Bernardino Valley College, teaching English, Literature, Library Science, and the History of Writing & Printing. In 1978, Lily and Joseph received sabbatical leave and took their two sons on a nine-month trip around the world, visiting 28 countries in Africa and Asia. Travel always played a major role in Lily's life. While Joseph passed the 100-country mark before the end of his life, Lily was not far behind. In 2003, Lily moved to Mountain View Retirement Center in Ashland, Ore. to be near her children. In 2011, Lily donated her collection of writing and printing to Southern Oregon University's Hannon Library, now displayed on the second floor. Lily is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris & Susan Hearn of Ashland and Eric & Lorraine Hearn of Lebanon, Ore.; three grandchildren, Annika, Joseph and Ava; and two sisters, Svava Hullfreda Seymour and Una Hildagerda Cline, both of White Rock, British Columbia. Lily was preceded in death by her brothers, Jonas Kristjanson, Gustaf Kristjanson, Arnthor Kristjanson, and Marino Kristjanson; and her parents, Hakon Jonasson Kristjanson and Gudny Solmundsdottir Kristjanson, all of Canada.
