However, the alleged victim, David Allen Hanscom, 45, said he slapped Jonathan David Wareham in the face during an argument on May 17. Hanscom alleges Wareham then pulled a knife from a sheath and stabbed him in the lower right abdomen, according to an affidavit. Two witnesses present during the incident backed up Hanscom's account, the affidavit said. Wareham, 37, of the 300 block of Orange Street, faces a charge of second-degree assault for the alleged stabbing in the 1300 block of Beekman Avenue in Medford. Police located Wareham after the alleged incident. In an interview with police, Wareham allegedly said he felt disrespected, then tripped into Hansom while sharpening his knife, the affidavit said. "That's what stabbed him," Wareham allegedly told police. Wareham entered a plea of not guilty to the second-degree assault charge Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. Under Oregon's Measure 11, the crime carries a minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison upon conviction. Wareham is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $100,000 bail.
