Truck hauling chemicals rolls over on I-5 A truck carrying hazardous chemicals that rolled over on Interstate 5 early Friday alerted the local Haz Mat team, and traffic was blocked on Highway 62 Friday afternoon while crews repaired power lines downed in a separate car crash. Approximately 900 pounds of powdered lye stayed put when a truck hauling a trailer rolled over onto the northbound I-5 shoulder near milepost 6 at 2:45 a.m. Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation officials discovered the truck's driver, Sean D. Wellcome, 40, of Centereach, N.Y., had been driving for over 19 hours without taking a break. He apparently was driving too fast around the curve, police said. He was cited for reckless driving, falsifying a driver's daily log book, possession of alcohol in a commercial vehicle and exceeding the 10-hour driver's rule. "He was way beyond his driving hours," said OSP Lt. Dan Durbin. An environmental recovery team from Crescent City, Calif., moved the chemicals after the Medford Haz Mat Team determined the load was secure. The truck, a 1999 Freightliner, and the trailer were totaled in the crash. No other vehicles were involved. Durbin said Friday that crews were still unsure how they would remove the truck. Wellcome was treated for minor injuries at Providence Medford Medical Center and released. In another incident, an elderly couple were injured when their 1973 Cadillac drove off Highway 62 at milepost 12 near Eagle Point and hit a power pole at 12:20 p.m. John and Marguerite Carlson of Shady Cove were transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center where they later were listed in fair condition. Highway traffic came to a halt for about 30 minutes while Pacific Power crews removed power lines that were draped across the road and replaced the pole. Durbin said it appeared John Carlson was not paying attention while driving.
