South girls perfect against North By DON HUNT When Bill Rowan took over the head coaching job in track at South Medford High in 1991, he inherited a girls team that had never lost to cross-town rival North Medford in a dual meet. The streak reached 15 straight on Tuesday. Sophomore sensation Teri Silva broke her own school record in the triple jump, added a victory in the high jump and finished second in the long jump to pace the Panthers to a 791/2-641/2 victory over the Black Tornado on a warm, sun-baked day at Newland Track. North Medford rode another Herculean performance by Scott Myers in the shot put and discus to squeak out a 73-72 victory on the boys' side of the meet. Myers launched the shot put 62-21/2 and the discus 179-1. Each effort came within a foot of his state-leading personal records of 62-11 and 180-1 and the two marks together served as his best-ever double. But not even the imposing figure of Myers could overshadow the South Medford girls, who used an overwhelming 45-18 advantage in the field events to push them to yet another dual-meet victory over their archrival. "Our girls are proud of that streak, and they went out and kept it going today," Rowan said. "The North girls have gotten a lot better since Mark (Hodges) took over their program last year, but we've been able to hold them off and keep the streak going. "It's a real credit to our girls." Silva, who broke the school record in the high jump (5-6) at the Crater Classic on Saturday, sailed 35-43/4 on her final attempt in the triple jump Tuesday to better her own school record by 21/4 inches. The mark was also a meet and Newland Track record. "I already had the event won going into my last jump, and that allowed me to relax and just go for it," said Silva, who also registered a lifetime best of 16-01/2 in the long jump to finish second to teammate Whitney Grant (16-4). Junior Hope Berkey also had a big day for the Panthers, launching the shot put a lifetime best and meet record 38-91/2 and coming back with a personal record of 103-8 to take second in the discus. Sophomore Noi Hilgendorf added victories in the 800 (2:28.0) and 1,500 (5:05.4) for the Panthers, who pushed their SOC dual meet record to 5-1 this spring. North Medford was led by freshman phenom Brittany Hodges, who ran a season's best of 57.8 in the 400, clocked 25.8 to win the 200 and anchored the Black Tornado to victory in both relays. "Our girls have come a long way in two years, but we're still not where we want to be," coach Hodges said. "We won the district title last year and we're still a good big-meet team, but we've got too many holes in our lineup to beat the really good dual-meet teams. "We've got to shore up some of our weaker events to be considered an elite program." The girls meet likely would have been much closer had the Tornado not been without Rosanna Medina, one of its top sprinters and jumpers who is sidelined with a stress fracture in her leg. North Medford suffered another setback when Sarah Rountree was disqualified in the 300 hurdles after apparently winning the event. Rountree stumbled through the final hurdle and pushed it over with her hands, causing the disqualification. The North Medford boys, meanwhile, needed a victory in the final event of the day - the 4 x 400 relay - to charge from behind and win by a single point. Both teams were missing key members of their long relay, but the Tornado quartet of Dustin Brooks, Alan Gomez, Matt Schneider and Matt Parish won handily in 3:32.8. "We were missing two of our better kids today (sprinter Alan Borelli and javelin thrower Matt Havniear), but our boys sucked it up," Hodges said. Hodges was most proud of Parish, who dashed to victory in the 400 (50.4), anchored the long relay to victory and took second to South Medford's Andres Reed in the 100 and 200. "Running all three sprint races and the long relay in one meet is quite a chore," Hodges said, "but Matt did it and he ran quality times in all four races."
