Eagle Point High School, Crater Academy of Health & Public Services and Crater Renaissance Academy were awarded grants ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 from the Nike School Innovation Fund earlier this month. The grants, which are renewable for three years, will cover the costs associated with implementing the Advancement Via Individual Determination program at each of the schools starting this fall. Eagle Point Middle School, White Mountain Middle School, Shady Cove School and Hanby Middle School also were awarded grants — $43,705 each — courtesy of the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation to implement the AVID program and participate in the Nike School Innovation Fund programs and events. The grants will cover the costs of AVID curriculum and resources, AVID membership dues, implementation support, as well as travel expenses for three staff members from each site to attend the College Readiness Training, which was held last week at Nike World Headquarters, and for eight staff members to attend the AVID Summer Institute in July in Denver. Nike only recently began awarding NSIF grants to schools outside the Beaverton, Hillsboro and Portland school districts. Only 50 of the 81 public high schools statewide that applied for the NSIF grant were awarded one, said Nike spokeswoman Annie Warner in an email. AVID targets students with a 2.0 to 3.0 grade point average who desire to go to college but are falling behind academically, explained Julie Howland, principal of Crater Academy of Health & Public Service. Often these are first-generation college-goers who don’t know how to navigate the system, she said, adding that only 17 percent of the Central Point community has a four-year college degree. Students who qualify are enrolled in an AVID elective, where they receive academic support from tutors and peers, are taught organizational and study skills (for example, test-taking and note-taking techniques), and participate in college field trips and other motivational activities. “You’re trying to help students learn to learn and learn to learn deeper,” Howland explained. “Again you’re trying to raise them from a good student to a great student.” Prior to being hired by the Central Point School District, Howland was an administrator at Madison High School in Northeast Portland, where she helped to launch the AVID program. Without Nike paying for the start-up costs and training, the Central Point School District would not be able to afford to offer the program, she said. This fall, the elective will be available to high school freshmen and sophomores at both Crater High School academies, but AVID instructional strategies will be implemented schoolwide, Howland said. EPHS Assistant Principal Heather Marinucci said the school also had considered offering the AVID program in years past because of its reputation for closing the achievement gap. According to AVID’s website, 36,481 seniors worldwide participated in AVID in 2013-14. Of those, 99 percent graduated, 88 percent applied to a four-year college or university, 78 percent were accepted, and 84 percent submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. “Our goal is to have 100 percent of the students that take the AVID elective get accepted to a four-year college or university,” said EPHS Principal Paul Cataldo.
