Endrikat advances to semifinals TUALATIN -- North Medford's Jon Endrikat advanced to the semifinals Friday at the Class 4A state boys tennis tournament at Tualatin Hills Recreation Center. Endrikat defeated Andrew Laing of Mountain View in his first match, 6-1, 6-4, then downed South Eugene's John Carolan, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Endrikat faces fourth-seeded Beau Smith of Cleveland High today. Smith downed Ashland's Aaron Harris, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) in second-round play. In doubles, the North Medford tandem of Brock Jonasson and Jeremy Leever defeated Tigard's Sean Barrington and Derrick Kershner, 6-3, 6-0, before losing in the round of 16 to the duo of Hayden Aalvik and Adam Burke from Lincoln, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5. Jonasson and Leever held a 30-love lead in the final set before dropping the match. "I think we proved that we were deserving of a seed that we didn't get," said North Medford coach Ray Odor of his unseeded doubles squad. "They (Jonasson, Leever) only lost five matches this season, and they were all to ranked opponents." The Black Tornado finished the day in fifth place overall with eight team points. Jesuit holds the lead with 16, while Lincoln is second with 12 and Lake Oswego and Sheldon are tied for third with 10. Roseburg is tied for sixth with Lakeridge and South Eugene, each with six points. South Medford's Zach and Eli Matthews were defeated by Sprague's Brian Mullin and Pete Roongsang, 6-1, 6-3, while Roseburg's duo of Todd Lindbloom and Ryan Felker advanced to today's semifinals. Lindbloom and Felker ousted South Eugene's Erin Noble and Robert Hancock, 6-0, 6-3, then moved on to the quarterfinals, where they defeated a doubles team from Sandy. Girls Tennis CLASS 4A STATE TOURNAMENT -- At Gresham, North Medford's Jenny Brown downed Emily Kirchem of Reynolds in second-round action on Friday at the class 4A state girls tennis tournament at Mount Hood Community College. Brown cruised past her first-round foe, Hermiston's Katie Schaefer, 6-0, 6-0, setting up her second-round, 7-5, 6-2, win over Kirchem. Leslie Schultz lost to Churchill's Kelli Royer, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. In doubles action, Roseburg's Elisa Tryon and Becky Correll advanced after a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0, second-round win over Jesuit's Katherine Hatch and Deidre Senders. North's Andrea Pratt and Kelsey Chamberlain fell to Grayce Nelson and Kaitlin Kelty, Jesuit, 6-3, 6-4, in the first-round while Ashland's Jenny Spears and Chelsea Johnson also dropped their first-round match, 6-2, 7-5, to Lincoln's Kristin Sunamoto and Kate Ottum. Softball GRANTS PASS 3, TUALATIN 2 -- At Tualatin, Grants Pass, the No. 4 Southern Oregon Conference team, won the pigtail state playoff game on a big hit and five outfield assists. Grants Pass next visits Portland Interscholastic League champion Wilson on Tuesday. The Cavers, who won their 20th game against seven losses, got a two-run double in the first inning from Gabby Rathburn to establish the lead it never relinquished. Rathburn's blast scored Seanna Doyle, who singled, and Reshaun Lewis, who walked. It would have scored a third run -- the bases were loaded -- but Alayna Peterson, who singled, missed home plate. Grants Pass stranded 10 runners. The Cavers benefited from five pegs from the outfield: two from center fielder Stephanie Franklin to home plate and three from right fielder Doyle to first base. Grants Pass pitcher Samantha Marrs allowed five hits, struck out five and walked three.
