Juan Antonio Gonzalez-Marquez, 21, admitted he fired a gun at two men last fall near Union Park, causing injuries to one victim that racked up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. "Well, I can't go any higher," Jackson County Circuit Judge David Hoppe said before sentencing Gonzalez-Marquez to 54 months in prison and three years' post-prison supervision. At just after 8 p.m. Oct. 13, 2015, Gonzalez-Marquez opened fire on Alex Adrian Enriquez and Zachary Michael Grant as the two were walking along Prune Street near Columbus Avenue. Grant was not hit, but Enriquez was shot twice, shattering his tibia and puncturing a lung. A bystander with military experience and medical supplies nearby rendered aid to Enriquez on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of Prune Street, and Enriquez was hospitalized in critical condition. Enriquez has recovered, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. Neither victim appeared at the hearing. Deputy District Attorney Marco Boccato called the outcome a "fair resolution" to the case, which he told Hoppe was gang-related. Hoppe asked Gonzalez-Marquez whether he wanted to comment prior to being sentenced for the two counts of attempted first-degree assault with a firearm. "Oh, nah. I've got nothing to say," Gonzalez-Marquez replied. Gang-related cases can be difficult to prosecute, Boccato said outside the courtroom, because victims often refuse to come forward. Boccato commended the work of Medford police Detective Bill Ford for overcoming obstacles in the case by using resources such as seized mobile phone records. As part of a plea agreement, Gonzalez-Marquez was ordered to pay restitution estimated at $45,960, the bulk of which is for medical bills, Boccato said. Court-appointed defense attorney Michael Bertholf said he plans to contest the amount. Gonzalez-Marquez has a violent past. As a minor, he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault for his role in a 2009 gang fight that left Marco Antonio Diaz beaten and stabbed to death. Gonzalez-Marquez was 14 at the time of the attack. He was sentenced to up to 10 years with the Oregon Youth Authority in 2010, but escaped from a treatment program in Junction City in 2014.
