Cloutier wins Jackson County volunteer award for April By Vickie Aldous Posted Apr 30, 2018 at 2:01 AM The Jackson County Board of Commissioners has awarded Mavis Cloutier, a longtime volunteer for Soroptimist International of Ashland, the county's Community Service Award for April. Cloutier has volunteered with the women's service group for 40 years. She also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children for 10 years and has volunteered at Asante Ashland Community Hospital and in local schools for years, county officials said when presenting Cloutier with the award. "This award is really not for me," Cloutier said. "It's for all the volunteers." She said the community and nation could not function without the work of volunteers. A retired registered nurse, Cloutier volunteers for community boards and committees related to medical care and has spearheaded multiple projects benefiting hundreds of people, county officials said. Cloutier is the coordinator for a pillow and blanket booth at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where patrons can rent pillows and blankets for outdoor theater performances. The booth is the primary fundraising activity for Soroptimist International of Ashland. The club's service work includes awarding scholarships to help women further their training and education. Cloutier spends many hours managing the pillow and blanket booth, the cash box, shift scheduling, pillow making, and cleaning and drying of rented items, county officials said. She urged anyone who is not volunteering to consider serving the community. Janie Burcart, president of Soroptimist International of Ashland, noted the women's service club has two chapters in Medford and chapters in Ashland, Central Point and Grants Pass.
