The walks last about two hours and cover a mile of moderately strenuous terrain through forests and meadows along Crater Lake's rim. No previous snowshoe experience is required, and snowshoes are provided free of charge. To sign up, call the park visitor center at 541-594-3100. Cross-country ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club holds group ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays at various locations, weather permitting. For details, see http://new.onc.org/sonc/ Table Rocks hikes Sunday, March 13: Lichen Hikin’ with a Fun-gi. Botanist John Villella and the Native Plant Society of Oregon will lead a 10 a.m. hike on Upper Table Rock to observe lichens, bryophytes and terrestrial algae. March is prime time for ephemeral bryophytes and terrestrial algae associated with the vernal pools on the top of the rock. There’s also a chance to observe early flowering wildflowers. Space is limited to 20 people. Call 541-618-2200 to register. Hikes are 3-5 miles roundtrip along a moderate grade trail and generally last 3 to 5 hours. Bring water and lunch or a snack. Celebrate spring break with a BLM environmental interpreter on a family hike to the top of Upper Table Rock. This is a general information hike suitable for the whole family. Topics will include wildflower identification, ethnobotany, geology, wildlife, ecology and cultural history. Space is limited to 20 people. Call 541-618-2200 to register. Birds and Bird Nests Saturday, March 5: Get the facts about local birds and their habitats from local science expert John Jackson of Bugs-R-Us. What is a bird nest made with? What do birds really like to eat? The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Applegate Library, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Applegate library, 18485 North Applegate Road. Tar 'N Trail run Saturday, March 12: The annual 6-mile run, sponsored by Rogue Valley Runners store in Ashland, starts at 8 a.m. The course includes a mixture of road and trail in and around Lithia Park, Hald-Strawberry Park and side streets of Ashland. For details, call 541-201-0014 or see roguevalleyrunners.com Shamrock Run Saturday, March 19: The annual 5-mile run/walk begins at 9 a.m. on the Crater High School track and goes onto the new, extended Bear Creek Greenway. For details, see the race calendar at www.southernoregonrunners.com Siskiyou Chapter Native Plant Society Thursday, March 17: Gabe Howe, founder and executive director of the Siskiyou Mountain Club, will discuss Kalmiopsis leachiana, a rare flowering shrub, and the role Lilla Leach played in the history of Southwest Oregon's largest federal wilderness. Howe will also present a visual tour through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness (post-Biscuit fire). Since 2010, the nonprofit Siskiyou Mountain Club has been dedicated to restoring, maintaining and promoting primitive trails in the Siskiyou backcountry. Refreshments will be available at 6:45 p.m. The meeting and program begin at 7 p.m. in the Southern Oregon University Science Building, Room 161. Free and open to the public. For information, call Dave at 541-535-5355. Saturday, April 9: Rough & Ready Botanical Wayside wildflower hike. The wayside provides a great opportunity for folks to come out and enjoy the spring wildflowers no matter what your plant identification skill level might be. This is a short hike on rocky, but relatively level ground, with many wildflowers, many of them rare or of limited range. A portion of the hike will be along a wheelchair accessible path. Bring water, and bring lunch if you want. There’s a picnic table overlooking Rough & Ready Creek. Meet at the parking area at Rough & Ready Botanical Wayside south of Cave Junction on Highway 199 at mile marker 34. For information, call Suzanne at 541-291-8860. Muddy Boot 3D Archery Shoot Saturday-Sunday, March 19-20: The sixth annual event will be held at Beekman Ridge Archery Range near Butte Falls. Cost is $20 for one day or $35 for two. Family rates are offered, and kids younger than 12 shoot free. Scorecards must be in by 3 p.m. Sunday to qualify. No range finders allowed. Food on site. Fee dry camping and fishing. Call Ginny Jensen at 541-488-1398. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Velo Slo-Mo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 7 to 10 mph over 12 to 18 miles on mostly flat terrain. Call Ken Kelley at 541-857-6819. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Crank It Up rides begin at various morning hours from different locations; 20 to 30 miles. Pace 12 to 15 mph, varied terrain.
