Julian 22nd in World 10,000 final SEVILLE, Spain -- Running in temperatures that soared above 100 degrees, Ashland product Pete Julian finished 22nd in the 10,000-meter run at the World Track and Field championships here Tuesday. World record holder Haile Gebrelassie of Ethiopia won the race in 27 minutes, 57:27 seconds. Ethiopians dominated, taking four of the top six places. Paul Tergat of Kenya finished second in 27:58.56, followed by Ethiopia's Assefa Mezgebu (27:59.15) and Girma Tolla (28:02.08) and Portugal's Antonio Pinto (28:03.42). Julian was clocked in 29:20.31, well off his lifetime best of 28:05.42. He defeated 10 other runners, five of whom did not finish. "I was OK with my race except I was hoping to have a better kick at the end," said Julian, who lives in Boulder, Colo. "But it was just wasn't there. "When I resume my workouts, speedwork is going to be the focus." Alan Culpepper, who won the U.S. qualifying meet in Eugene, was among the runners who succumbed to the heat and didn't finish.
