Guthrie fans career-high 11 STANFORD, Calif. Jeremy Guthrie pitched five-hit ball over eight innings and struck out a career-high 11 as No. 1 Stanford defeated Oregon State, 4-1, in the opening game of their Pacific-10 baseball series Thursday evening at Sunken Diamond. OSU (21-14 overall, 5-5 Pacific-10) got a seven-hitter from pitcher Thad Johnson, as the senior right-hander threw his second straight complete game. "Thad pitched great," OSU coach Pat Casey said. "He did an outstanding job against a club that is very, very good. Im amazed that with as many players as Stanford lost after last season (when the Cardinal reached the College World Series final), that theyve been able to reload and recover that quickly." The Beavers didnt come up with their first hit off Guthrie until the top of the fifth inning, when Brian Barden singled through the right side to lead off the frame. He was caught stealing before Curtis Davis grounded another single through the right side later in the inning.
