Amy's Kitchen recalls products that might have contaminated spinach Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 23, 2015 at 4:18 PM Posted Mar. 23, 2015 at 4:18 PM » Social News Amy’s Kitchen Inc. is voluntarily recalling nearly 74,000 cases of frozen foods containing organic spinach that might have been contaminated with listeria. Amy’s Kitchen, which is based in Petaluma, Calif., and has a plant in White City, issued the recall today after one of its organic spinach suppliers reported that Amy's might have received spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, a company news release shared by the Food and Drug Administration reported. Amy’s Kitchen is not aware of any illnesses so far related to the recalled products, which include frozen lasagnas, enchiladas, spinach pizza and rice and pasta bowls produced in January, February and early March. See a detailed list of the recalled products at fda.gov .  The recalled products were distributed to stores in the United States and in Canada, the company reported in a news release. The initial release didn't report where the suspect products were produced.  Amy’s Kitchen has notified its distributors and retailers and is taking this voluntary action as a precautionary measure, the news release said. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration. Consumers who have any of the products identified in the chart seen in the link above are urged to dispose of them or return them to the store where they were purchased for an exchange or full refund. Consumers may also call Amy’s at 707-781-7535 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
