Fourth-inning outburst carries Eagles Prep roundup EAGLE POINT -- A four-run fourth inning propelled Eagle Point to a 7-5 softball victory over visiting Thurston Tuesday afternoon in the Eagles' final tune-up before the Southern Oregon Conference season starts next Tuesday. The Eagles paraded nine batters to the plate as they broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth, parlaying four hits and two errors into the decisive rally. Colleen Heider started things with a single. Connie McGonagle reached on an error, leaving runners at first and third. Heider then scored on a double steal. McGonagle scored on an error that allowed Alaina Corliss to reach first base. Then Cindy Josephson reached on an infield hit, setting the stage for Becca Heady's two-run double to right field. Heady finished 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs as the Eagles improved to 3-4 on the season. Winning pitcher Stacy Horn was 3-for-4 and scored a run. "We had a little mental letdown in the top of the seventh," Eagle Point coach Don Boucher said. "We had two errors and let them have two runs. We've got to finish better, it makes coaches nervous." Baseball EAGLE POINT 8, HENLEY 7, 11 innings -- At Eagle Point, Mike Newmann scored the winning run and picked up the victory with a five-inning relief stint in the non-conference game at The Yard. Newmann doubled with one out in the 11th inning, then scored his third run of the game on brother Nick's single. Mike Newmann, who led the Eagles with three hits, gave up three runs in the top of the seventh that allowed Henley to tie the game, but shut out the Hornets the rest of the way. Brian Fiebiger, Justin Whisenhunt and Carlos Stevenson had two hits each for the Eagles. For Henley, Sam Tacchini had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two. Boys Tennis GRANTS PASS 8, KLAMATH UNION 1 -- At Klamath Falls, the Cavemen opened the Southern Oregon Conference with a win as both teams braved snow flurries to complete the match. Grants Pass had little trouble with the Pelicans, with all of its singles players earning a win.
