The Bureau of Land Management's Medford District has cleanup options for volunteers along the Rogue River, in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and atop Grayback Mountain near Williams. The Rogue clean-up project annually removes trash from the stream and banks at many sites between McGregor Park near Cole Rivers Hatchery and the Gold Hill boat ramp. The clean-up runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a free picnic and raffle giveaways. All equipment will be provided. Some volunteers will be able to ride in rafts rowed by volunteers to collect garbage from TouVelle State Park down to Fishers Ferry, says organizer Gail Perrotti. Also, ground crews will drive in to other accessible sites to clean up, Perrotti says. A separate crew using boats will float and remove debris in the Shady Cove area, Perrotti says. Those looking for higher elevations can help clean and maintain pieces of the Pilot Rock Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail within the confines of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument east of Ashland. Work parties on both trails will conduct vegetation clean-up, help finish a new Pilot Rock Trail parking area and remove vehicle scars on lands. Food, drinks and personal protective equipment will be provided. The event will celebrate both the 15th anniversary of the monument's creation as well as the National Conservation Lands System. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Pilot Rock parking area at 8:30 a.m. To get there, take Interstate 5 south to Exit 6, then go two miles south of Old Highway 99 and turn left onto BLM Rd 39-3E-32.3. Travel two more miles and the road ends at the parking area. For more information, contact Zach Million at 541-618-2318. In Josephine County, Saturday's BLM volunteer project will look to maintain the Grayback Mountain Trail to the top of Grayback Mountain, which is the highest peak in Josephine County. With the help of the Forest Service, the community of Williams other volunteers in past events, BLM was able to build the trail between 1989 and 2006. The six-mile trail connects to the Forest Service Boundary Trail and the O’Brien Trail. Work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. For more information, call Colby Hawkinson at 541-471-6610. Ride the Rogue The annual Ride the Rogue biking event will be held Saturday, Sept. 19. The event features several rides, a gourmet feast and live music at Palmerton Park in Rogue River. Rides include a 100 miles, 70 miles, 40 miles and 25 miles. All proceeds support the development of the Rogue River Recreational Corridor and Greenway project. For details, including registration and starting times for rides, see http://ridetherogue.org Applegate trail group goes wild The Applegate Trail Association's annual fundraiser, "Call of the Wild," will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at Cantrall-Buckley Park near Ruch. The event will feature lectures and a play, with a keynote address by Wildlife Images, as well as numerous workshops, including backcountry skills, wildflowers, a medicinal plant walk, river ecology, nature writing, photography and wolves.
