Coggins was one of four locals who were named to their respective all-state first teams at the Class 3A and 5A levels. Class 6A and 4A all-state baseball and softball teams were released last month. Coggins was joined on the Class 3A baseball first team by Challengers teammate Will Weaver, while Ashland senior Grace Lenthe and Eagle Point junior Kylene Briggs were selected to the Class 5A softball first team. Coggins earned first-team acclaim as a senior pitcher after going 11-2 with a 1.21 ERA for Cascade Christian. He posted an impressive 133 strikeouts against 19 walks in 75⅓ innings, and also batted .521 with 30 RBIs and 37 runs scored for a Cascade Christian team that fell one win shy of a repeat appearance in the 3A state title game. Weaver earned his first-team nod as a utility player, essentially trading off with Coggins at shortstop whenever the other took the mound. The senior Weaver batted .385 with 26 RBIs and 23 runs scored while also posting a perfect pitching record at 11-0 with a 0.99 ERA. Weaver struck out 54 and walked only six in 75 innings. In other 3A baseball honors, Cascade Christian junior Kevin Wheeler was an honorable mention outfielder, while St. Mary’s totaled five all-state nods thanks to the efforts of junior Joe Johnson (second team first baseman), sophomore Spencer McCabe (third team pitcher), junior Ty Mulholland (junior catcher), sophomore Ben Robinson (third team utility) and junior Tanner Smith (honorable mention outfielder). Rogue River senior Garrett Carpenter was a third-team outfielder selection, while Clatskanie’s German George was named 3A baseball player of the year. Glide’s Al skinner and Clatskanie’s Ryan Tompkins shared 3A coach of the year honors. Lenthe, who was player of the year in the Midwestern League, batted .512 as a top producer for Ashland. The senior standout was named to the first team as an infielder after the shortstop managed 36 RBIs and 27 runs scored for the Grizzlies. Briggs, another power hitter like Lenthe, was named to the 5A first team as a utility/designated hitter after helping power a productive Eagle Point lineup that averaged nearly eight runs per game. Eagle Point teammate, sophomore Megan Ayers, was named to the all-state second team as a pitcher, while Crater junior Sydney Beck was selected as a third-team outfielder and Ashland senior Teresa Lehman was an honorable mention catcher. Pendleton’s Darian Lindsey was named 5A softball player of the year and Rex Putnam’s Sarah Abramson was pitcher of the year and Tiffany Strnad was coach of the year. In 5A baseball, Ashland senior Jerry Carroll was the lone local all-state selection after he was tabbed as a second-team outfielder. Liberty’s Tyler Parker was named 5A baseball player of the year, while Hood River Valley’s Ryan Ward earned pitcher of the year and Erich Harjo was named coach of the year. In 3A softball, Rogue River senior Josie Pratt was an honorable mention infielder. Santiam Christian’s Kaylee Buhrkuhl was named player of the year, Rainier’s Sarah Probasco pitcher of the year and Dayton’s Rob Umbenhower coach of the year.
