By the middle of the week, temperatures could hit record highs for the year. “If we get 74 and 75 degrees, those will be the warmest days of the year,” said John Lovegrove, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Medford. The weather service is predicting a temperature of 74 on Thursday and 75 on Friday, which could top 73 degrees recorded on March 18 and 19, the previous warmest days of the year. The average high temperature for this time of year is 61 degrees. Before the warm spell sets in, the valley will see a little bit of a cold snap on Monday, and then on Tuesday the high temperature is predicted to hit 60, followed by 69 on Wednesday. Unfortunately for local residents, the temperatures will begin dropping again by next weekend, sliding down to 69 for Saturday and 65 for Sunday, with possibly more rain. Lovegrove said long-range forecasts indicate the El Nino weather pattern that was seen this winter could be weakening, which could mean less rain in the near future. For the calendar year so far, 7.70 inches of rain fell at the Medford airport, or 1.81 inches above normal. Last year at the same time, the airport recorded 5.77 inches. For the water year, which starts on Oct. 1, the valley has had 17.49 inches, which is 3.93 above normal. At the same date last year, 12.62 inches of rain had fallen. As for snow on the valley floor, only 1.91 inches has fallen this winter, 2.2 inches below normal.
