BOYS PREP SOCCER Phoenix blanks Bonanza goes 3-0 in league BONANZA -- Home-field advantage takes on a whole different meaning for teams venturing into the realm of the Bonanza soccer team. Phoenix handled the smaller field and an aggressive Antler team to pull out a 3-0 District 6 boys win on Tuesday. The victory boosted the Pirates' league record to 3-0 and 6-1-1 overall. Japanese foreign exchange student Masaya Yano continued to shine for the Pirates, breaking a scoreless tie at the 35th minute with a goal. Yano stole the ball and dribbled down for the score, giving Phoenix a 1-0 lead at the break. Jesse Shorland upped the lead to 2-0 at the 68th minute with a goal from six yards out. Bonanza then made a critical mistake with a hand-ball penalty in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Pirates. Shorland made good on the attempt at the 77-minute mark to seal the win. "We controlled the tempo the whole game," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner. "The small field kept us on our toes throughout the game." Pirate goalie Tony Machado played a tremendous game, knocking down all six of the Antlers' shots on goal. Phoenix attempted 19 shots on goal. Sophomore sweeper Al Albright and freshman Chris Swann also contributed defensively. Non-conference NORTH VALLEY 0, ASHLAND 0 -- At Merlin, North Valley achieved a moral victory with a scoreless non-conference tie against Ashland. After losing two consecutive games on penalty kicks, the Knights held their ground behind goalkeeper Lee Manes. Manes stopped 11 of the 17 shots on goal by Ashland to preserve the tie. Ashland (5-0-4) played without starters Mike McNamara, Zack Potocki, Miles Doshier and Eric Sharp. KLAMATH UNION 3, HENLEY 2 -- At Klamath Falls, Phil Card and Luis Garcia led a second-half comeback for Klamath Union in a non-conference win. Down 2-0 at the half, Card started the rally with his first goal at the 56 minute mark off an assist from Garcia. Krister Balme tied things up on a penalty kick and Card and Garcia hooked up again with Card punching home the final goal. Jake Waterberg and Chris Kreiger scored the two first half goals for Henley (2-5-1). The Pelicans (4-3-1) outshot the Hornets 14-10.
