Is it all for the same project? — Joseph R., Medford Well, well, we seem to have some kind of theme here. People all over town are wondering what's the deal with the big equipment, pipes and piles of dirt on the east side of Medford. We're sure you all read our pithy post on Sept. 26, when we noted that Avista, your friendly local natural gas company, is installing new lines as it bolsters its "backbone" with larger lines to handle growth in the area. That work, we noted then, has been going on in the Delta Waters area east of Crater Lake Avenue. It's also happening in a variety of other locations in east Medford, including along Springbrook and Hillcrest roads. And there's a staging area, with a variety of equipment and materials parked off of Foothill Road, about a quarter-mile north of Hillcrest. Once the work is done, Avista will have larger lines on both sides of town, and natural gas pipelines coming into the Rogue Valley from opposite directions — Klamath County and Grants Pass — will be connected. There's more than meets the eye with the gas line work at Hillcrest and Pierce. There, says Steve Vincent, Avista Utilities Oregon regional business manager, workers are using a boring rig to tunnel their way to a spot east of the Foothill-North Phoenix Road connection. That allows the company to install the pipe without digging a giant ditch along that stretch of road. And, finally, speaking of North Phoenix Road, that is not connected with the Avista work. Rather, says Cory Crebbin, city of Medford public works director, the work there is being done by a developer to bring a section of North Phoenix up to city standards.
