Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 1, 2005 Fire damages Grants Pass restaurant A fire broke out Monday night in the chimney of a Grants Pass restaurant, triggering a small evacuation and causing Grants Pass firefighters to scramble for help, authorities said. No one was reported injured in the fire at Rafters Bar & Grill, which is part of the Riverside Inn complex at 971 SE Sixth St. The fire apparently started in the three-story, indoor-outdoor chimney of the three-story structure, which includes the restaurant, a party room and offices, said Charmaine Brown, director of operations for Vintage Hotels, which owns the facility. "We did sustain damage to the restaurant, but it’s not a total loss," Brown said. "I cannot assess how severe until I can get in and look at it (today)." Ten people were in the 5,000-square-foot restaurant at the time of the fire, and they were evacuated safely, Brown said. Visitors staying in two adjacent suites were moved to rooms at the other end of the facility, Brown said. Advertisement Firefighters from Jackson County were called in to Josephine County late Monday to help battle the five-alarm fire, firefighters said. Other units were called to Josephine County to stand by and handle other calls while Grants Pass units were at the restaurant fire, firefighters said. Further information was not available Monday.
