Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 14, 2006 Honor Roll Soccer Three members of the Rogue Valley Soccer Club have been recognized with statewide awards at the annual meeting of the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. South Medford High School seniors Dane Happeny and Brett Hamilton were named 2005 TOP Soccer volunteers of the year, recognizing them for their work with kids with disabilities. Working with Dave Potter, who recently retired as South Medford’s boys soccer coach, Happeny and Hamilton helped organize and develop the TOP Soccer program in the Rogue Valley. TOP Soccer provides training and playing opportunities for youths with mental or physical disabilities. The pair have worked with Potter on the program for three years, teaching soccer to the kids in the program. In the same meeting, Gregorio Alegria was named 2005 Boys Classic coach of the year for the state. Alegria was recognized for his work with the Pumas, an under-11 boys teams that will compete this spring for a state title in its age category. Alegria was selected from among 35 coaches who were nominated statewide. Advertisement "He has the ability to teach the game to his boys and to execute on game day," RVSC head coach Gary Osterhage said. "Not only will they run through a brick wall for him, but he has taught them how to creatively get around that wall." Wrestling WOODBURN — Three Hedrick Middle School wrestlers qualified for the Junior Nationals this summer and helped the school place fourth among 87 teams in the junior high state championships. The top three in each weight class are eligible for nationals. Seventh-grader Jordan Silva won the 170-pound division, gaining pins in his first four matches and a technical-fall victory in the final. At 145, eighth-grader Mark Dickson lost 3-0 in the championship, taking second place, and Ryan Mahoney was third at 136. Trent Kaiser of Eagle Point won the 95-pound class, going 4-0. Other local wrestlers to qualify for nationals were Talent’s Robert Blubaugh , second at 100, and Rogue River’s Tony Ferris, third at 129. Finishing fourth were Scenic’s Jason Adams (95), Hedrick’s Colin Sowers (145) and Eagle Point’s Steve Josephson (155). Hedrick scored 91.5 points for fourth place and Eagle Point was 15th with 51. Sandstone won with 134.5. Basketball In boys AAU play, the Phoenix Bucs sixth-grade team placed first and the seventh-grade team second at the Bay Area Invitational tournament Saturday at North Bend High. In the sixth-grade bracket, Phoenix (29-1) beat teams representing Coquille, Marshfield and North Bend. The Bucs defeated North Bend 64-48 for the title, finishing the season on a 26-game winning streak. In seventh-grade play, Phoenix (19-9) defeated Coos County teams in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds before falling to the Siletz Swish in the title game.
