And thanks to a clutch performance by senior point guard Tyler Cochran, Cascade Christian boys basketball team stayed on course to be the main course in the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic. The Challengers survived a fierce push from a talented Pacific team on Thursday, winning 46-44 to remain in the championship bracket of their annual tournament. Cascade Christian earned a trip to the semifinals, in which it will face Santiam Christian, a first-round winner over Phoenix, tonight at 7:30. If it wasn’t for Cochran, who sank 9 of 11 free throws in the final period — 13 of 16 for the game — en route to a game-high 24 points, the Challengers (4-2) would have been subjected to the morning consolation round. “If he doesn’t play well, we don’t win that game,” said Challengers coach Brian Morse, adding that everyone else on the team besides Cochran had an off shooting night. “That’s what you want out of a point guard,” said Morse. "You want the ball in his hands at the end of the game.” Cascade Christian led by eight with about two minutes to play, but the Pirates (7-2), who saw their seven-game winning streak snapped, stormed back behind hot shooting from senior forward Jack Lehnherr, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the final period. Lehnherr, senior wing Justin Hall (15 points) and senior center John Keeler (13 points) provided balanced scoring for Pacific, a Class 1A program that last year won 24 games and this year returns all of its players. “They are really good and they were hungry,” said Morse, who complimented Pacific’s matchup zone, defensive activity and offensive continuity. “It was a good game for us,” he added. Subaru Classic ASHLAND 75, WESTSIDE CHRISTIAN 59: Senior guard Anthony Swanson erupted for 36 points to lead Ashland past Westside Christian. The win, Ashland’s fourth in a row, sends the Grizzlies against defending Class 3A state champion Dayton, which defeated St. Mary's. Swanson converted 14 field goals, including five in the third quarter, to help the Grizzlies (4-2) extend an eight-point halftime lead to 14 heading into the fourth. KJ Pippa added 12 points, including eight in the first half, and Adam Jones 11 for the Grizzlies, who rebounded from a sluggish start by capitalizing on Westside Christian’s early foul trouble.
