My life then was more about me. In hindsight, I have learned how critical that issue was then and still continues. I have since wondered if I would have had the courage to step up and support equal rights protests if I had grown up where racial bias was so pervasive. I'm not sure. Now, however, after a few decades of increasing awareness, I do know we are facing another serious crisis — global climate change is leading to worldwide problems and troublesome trends right here in our region. We can do something about this. So I do not intend to stand by and later apologize to my grandchildren for doing nothing. We may be the last generation able to successfully address global climate implications and I intend to be part of the solution. Please consider learning more about climate change and add your energies to help address these issues. It isn't just our material well-being that's at stake, it is also our freedom and our democracy, and Citizens United is stomping all over anyone or thing that gets in its way — thus enters the Koch brothers. The Koch brothers are using their billions to transform the Republican Party into a protection racket for Koch Industries profits. There will be no major bills passed to put America back to work with this regime, nor pay raises nor background checks to buy a gun, nor women's health care. America has been sold. Michael A. Long Trail Ashamed of our leaders Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley voted against defunding sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities' protection of illegal immigrants is a direct violation of federal immigration laws. Wyden and Merkley also voted against Kate's Law, which makes a mandatory five-year prison term for an illegal immigrant committing a felony in this country who is deported and then re-enters the country. These men took a vow to uphold the law when they took office. Wyden and Merkley clearly don't represent the people of Oregon. Our federal government is dysfunctional and has lost the trust of a majority of Americans and this majority also feels this country is headed in the wrong direction. I am proud of our country and ashamed of our government. Dick Dunbar Medford Alternate pipeline route I want to thank Jim Horner for pointing out in his letter to the editor on Oct. 13 that he is an ardent supporter of the LNG project and that he would welcome a pipeline for LNG running through his front yard, his neighbors’ yards and right through his neighborhood in Jacksonville. I’ll bet the one-time payment of a few thousand dollars will be more than enough compensation for the permanent easement on his property. And he won’t mind when Jordan Cove employees come around to spray unwanted vegetation with herbicide in the 50-foot easement. I’ll be sure to bring this up as an alternative route to Jordan Cove right away! Lisa Chain Shady Cove Security for Gold Hill As a longtime resident of Gold Hill, I have experienced the many frustrations of living with no (or minimal) law enforcement. As a small town, we lack the sophistication necessary to effectively manage our own police department, so contracting with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office makes perfect sense. The world we live in can be dangerous, and Gold Hill seems to have its fair share of troublemakers. I for one will gladly pay $1.00 a day for the security and peace of mind afforded by the presence of a professional, highly trained sheriff's deputy. I urge my friends and neighbors to support the upcoming ballot measure which will provide us with much needed law enforcement. For less than the cost of a daily cup of coffee, we can enjoy the much needed protection JCSO will provide Gold Hill residents and businesses.
