Medford man faces murder counts Arrested in Illinois killings A Medford man was arrested at work Monday morning in connection with a 1996 double slaying in a Chicago suburb, authorities said. James Justin Thivel, 27, was taken into custody on two counts of murder as he arrived for work at National Flora, according to Detective Greg Wright of the Oregon State Police. Thivel, of 2981 State St. No. 66, is accused of shooting Eva Caudell, 20, and Robert Farberger, 24. Their bodies, each with multiple gunshot wounds to the back of the head, were found Jan. 10, 1996, in a car in Des Plaines, Ill. According to published accounts, both victims had ties to the Latin Kings gang in Chicago. Farberger also had a long rap sheet and once served prison time on a conviction for car theft. A spokesman for Des Plaines police declined to discuss the case in detail, except to say the victims were acquainted with Thivel. "I can't really say anything more about it than that," Lt. David Hachmeister said. "It's too soon for us to talk about motive.'' Wright said Thivel moved to Oregon shortly after the shootings and always has been a suspect in the case. He was even arrested at one point, but police let him go because of insufficient evidence. New evidence and witnesses convinced police to arrest him again, Wright said. Des Plaines detectives flew out to make the collar. "He was very aware he was a suspect," Wright said. "I'm sure he got tired of looking over his shoulder."
