The difference this season is a new coach in Steve Sarkisian. So, does Oregon State’s coach know much about USC this time around? “I think it’s more similar than different; lots of good talent,” Riley said of USC’s look. “I suppose offensively, their style is a little bit different today, but you know, when you’re talking about athletes and athletic ability, they’re very similar.” Last season at Reser Stadium, USC ended up with a 31-14 victory. The Trojans led 14-0 after the first quarter only to see the Beavers storm back to tie the game early in the second on a Brandin Cooks touchdown reception and, moments later, a 41-yard interception return to the end zone by Ryan Murphy. But that would be it as the Trojans pulled away with another touchdown before halftime and 10 more points in the third quarter. Out of the key offensive contributors in USC’s victory, quarterback Cody Kessler (17 of 21, 247 yards, one touchdown) and running back Javorius Allen (144 yards rushing, three touchdowns) are back. Running back Silas Redd (140 yards) and wide receiver Marqise Lee (five catches, 105 yards, one touchdown) are now in the NFL. As for USC’s defense, which did well against Stanford but had breakdowns in the loss to Boston College, Riley believes Eagles quarterback Tyler Murphy was a major factor. “They had a few tough plays against a very active, mobile quarterback,” he said. “I think that was the difference in the game.” The Pac-12 grind has started for a few teams already and Riley knows the Beavers will need to step up their game. “You can just look at Oregon-Washington State,” he said. “You can look at Cal and Arizona. It’s going to be very, very competitive.” In the case of Oregon-WSU, the Ducks had to fight for a one-touchdown victory up in Pullman on Saturday night while Arizona came from behind to stun Cal, winning on a desperation pass on the final play. KINGS OF LATE NIGHT: The gremlins who draw up the Pac-12 television schedules granted Oregon State a reprieve by putting the Beavers in a 1 p.m. slot for their Oct. 4 game at Colorado. But things return to normal 12 days later, with OSU playing a 7 p.m., Thursday night, home game against Utah. Oh boy. Mid-week, mid-October, night game. How full might the stadium will be for that one? If you’re keeping score, nine of OSU’s last 11 games — counting this week’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff with USC — have begun or will begin at 6 p.m. or later. Utah will make it 10 out of 13. Washington State has it worse. The Cougars’ first seven games this season have been or will be played at night. Nothing like sticking it to the two schools in small communities with uncertain weather that depend on fans driving in from elsewhere. Of course, OSU and WSU aren’t complaining about the TV money. This is the collateral damage for small markets when television rules. The Beavers played at Hawaii in the second week of the season. This entitled OSU to schedule a 13th regular-season game, something the NCAA allows for schools that play in the islands. Washington took advantage to schedule last week’s nonconference game against Georgia State. OSU spokesman Steve Fenk explains the Beavers passed on the opportunity for a 13th game and took a schedule bye instead.
