Bryan Patrick Graley, 25, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated first-degree theft, first-degree criminal mischief and reckless driving. Bail was set at $23,000, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. Medford police detectives on Tuesday traveled to Klamath County to pick up Graley after sheriff’s deputies there stopped his 1991 GMC Yukon. Graley allegedly rammed the downtown statue around 2 a.m. Saturday morning with his sport- utility vehicle, then drove off after a security guard confronted him and an accomplice. Police are still looking for the unknown man who was traveling with Graley when the $25,000 statue was damaged. Witnesses told police two men tried to lift the heavy bronze statue into the SUV after ramming it. The statue depicts a sitting man bent over a table with a chess set on it. It was installed in Vogel Plaza more than two years ago. The chess player, who Moran said is known by some as "Chester," was damaged in the incident and seized by police as evidence. Moran said if police catch up to Graley’s partner in crime, he will face charges of first-degree criminal mischief and attempted aggravated first-degree theft. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to phone Medford police at 774-2228 or 770-4783.
