GRANTS PASS Crash injures five teenage girls and the 22-year-old driver Comment By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 5:19 PM By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 5:19 PM » Social News A horrific crash Saturday night on Gunnell Road near Whitehorse Park sent five teenage girls and the 22-year-old driver to the hospital, all badly injured. Condolences and "RIP" messages were posted on Facebook by friends saying one of the teens had died, but Oregon State Police would not confirm that. The crash occurred shortly after midnight, as 22-year-old Breanna Allene White was driving a car full of friends down Gunnell Road toward Lower River Road. Initial reports indicate the 1999 Isuzu SUV drifted off the road's right shoulder and White overcorrected, causing the car to go out of control and roll. Some of the occupants were ejected from the car. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found the occupants scattered around the crash site. "Some of them were in the road, some of them were over the embankment," Rural/Metro Fire Division Chief Austin Prince said. One girl was trapped inside the car, which had landed upside-down. Five ambulances responded to the scene, along with a Mercy Flights helicopter that airlifted one person to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford. Two others were taken to that same hospital by ground ambulance, and the three remaining girls were transported to Three Rivers Medical Center. At least two of the victims who went to Rogue Regional, including White, have been transferred to other hospitals out of the area. Prince said the extent of their injuries varied, but it appeared one of the car's occupants was able to call 911 after the crash. Two of the passengers were 16, and the others were 17, 15 and 13 years old. In November, White was sentenced to 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to hindering prosecution, second-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment for an Oct. 5 incident in which she was driving a car full of friends who were playing "mailbox baseball" — vandalizing mailboxes by smashing them with a bat from a moving vehicle. In that incident, a woman in the front passenger seat lost her grip on the bat and it flew backward, hitting and badly injuring a 16-year-old boy. Gunnell Road provides access to Matson Park along the Rogue River west of Whitehorse Park, about 10 miles west of Grants Pass.
